Polyphasic Sleep Day #8 - Sunday - 11-26-06
Total time on polyphasic sleep: 180 hours. 7.5 days.
Nap Log
12:00 AM - 6 hours
8:00 - 40 minutes.
12:00 PM - 20 minutes
4:00 - 20 minutes
8:00 - 20 minutes
Total Sleep Time: 7 hours and 40 minutes.
How do I feel: Wow. I got more sleep than I usually do during monophasic sleep. This is embarassing. Interesting point - I kind of skipped by 8 PM nap, which led to (probably not coincidentally) a 6 hour "nap" from 12:00 - 6:00 AM. Lesson learned: Take good naps. Force yourself to nap. My little brother laughed at me and pointed out that I've been sleeping more during "polyphasic" sleeping rather than "monophasic" sleeping. Embarassing, yet true. My mom says that I can't fight human physiology and that I NEED to sleep like a normal person... Not giving up, yet. I plan to give it at least two weeks before I figure out whether or not I can continue with the polyphasic sleep cycle. Interesting point: Even with my irregular naps, my past 8 days have been the most productive since I arrived in NYC... exactly a 100 days ago. Coincidence? Probably not.
Polyphasic Sleep Day #7 - Saturday - 11-25-06
Total time on polyphasic sleep: 156 hours.
Nap Log
12:00 AM - 20 minutes
4:00 AM - 5.5 hours
12:00 PM - 20 minutes
4:00 - 20 minutes
8:00 - 20 minutes
Total Sleep Time: 6 hours and 20 minutes.
How do I feel: Yup. I slept for 5.5 hours from 4:00 AM - 9:30 AM. My body couldn't handle it anymore. The problem with my polyphasic sleep cycle right now is that... you're supposed to take it REALLY easy your first week. However... I've been studying, working, and reading more than I ever have this year. That's why my body finally broke down and gave in to sleep deprivation. Also, I noticed that I easily sleep through my cell phone alarm clock... so I bought a REAL alarm clock today. I am going to do everything I can today to stick to my sleep cycles and make it through the night without sleeping for more than 20 minutes per nap. Also... I noticed that when I sleep in my bed... I automatically think "monophasic sleep." So I decided to sleep on my sofa chair until I get used to polyphasic sleeping... I feel like a science project... tweaking things here and there in order to accomplish this.
Polyphasic Sleep Day #6 - Friday - 11-24-06
Total time on polyphasic sleep: 132 hours.
Nap Log
12:00 AM - 2 hours.
4:00 - 1 hour.
8:00 - 20 minutes.
12:00 PM - 20 minutes.
4:00 - 20 minutes.
8:00 - 20 minutes.
Total Sleep Time: 4 hours and 20 minutes.
How do I feel: Today was definitely better though I overslept earlier in the morning. I am slowly but surely getting used to this new life. Most importantly today, I found out a way to wake up after my mini-naps. I have my MP3 player right next to me... and as soon as the alarm goes off, I put on the earphones and start listening to my music / podcasts. Sooner or later (within 2 minutes)... I wake up. Nice.
Polyphasic Sleep Day #5 - Thursday - 11-23-06
Total time on polyphasic sleep: 108 hours.
Nap Log
4:00 AM - 2 hours.
8:30 - 20 minutes.
12:30 - 20 minutes.
4:30 - 20 minutes.
8:30 PM - 20 minutes.
Total Sleep Time: 3.5 hours
How do I feel: Hmm... I actually got 6 hours of sleep last night, so today shouldn't really count as a polyphasic sleep day. Anyhow, I realize that I sleep more when I'm warm and less when I'm cold. Another thing I realized while reading www.stevepavlina.com is that I don't let my brain rest. I'm always studying, working, moving, and reading while I'm "awake." I read that during the adjustment period I'm supposed to "take it easy..." Not gonna happen. I recently learned that Leonardo Da Vinci was on the polyphasic sleep cycle.
Polyphasic Sleep Day #4 - Wednesday - 11-22-06
Total time on polyphasic sleep: 84 hours.
Nap Log
12:00 - 20 minutes.
3:00 - 20 minutes.
5:00 - 60 minutes.
7:30 - 60 minutes.
12:00 - 20 minutes.
4:00 - 20 minutes.
9:30 - 2:00 AM - 4.5 hours.
Total Sleep Time: 7 hours and 50 minutes.
How do I feel: Today was horrible. Again, I overslept between 12:00 - 8:00 AM. I had actually had a very personal event happen to me today that's unrelated from polyphasic sleep, where I was very disturbed from 4:00 - 9:00 PM. I couldn't handle the pressure and stress anymore and simply "knocked out" at 9:30 PM. Another thing is that I missed my scheduled nap time of 8:00 PM by about an hour and a half. I felt my body kind of "turning off" as more and more time elapsed between my scheduled nap time. I'm thinking of changing to a 1:00, 5:00, 9:00, 1:00 sleep plan. It might better accomodate my schedule...
For a moment, I thought of giving up and going back to monophasic... but I love this lifestyle. More on that later...
